Originally designed for network attached storage (NAS) devices and enterprise data centers, the IronWolf Pro drives are intended to be more reliable than the consumer-focused Seagate BarraCuda lineup, and they’re priced accordingly, which helps account for much of the 1big Dock’s expense. This dock comes with a Seagate IronWolf Pro 7,200rpm hard drive slotted in. The main reason you’d buy the 1big Dock instead of a much-less-expensive and smaller docking station is to gain storage capacity. The most eye-catching part of the design is the giant blue indicator LED on the front panel, which looks like some sort of blue cyclops eye. It’s not as industrial-chic as some of LaCie’s other products, but neither is it stodgy-looking. The result is a rather bulky black and gray rectangle, measuring 2.2 by 4.7 by 8.5 inches (HWD) and weighing 3.75 pounds. But LaCie has enlarged it considerably to fit several additional ports and slots on its front and back, and to accommodate the company’s distinctive industrial styling. It serves well its niche as a tool for well-heeled creative pros with lots of gear and cards to connect, and terabytes of priceless data to churn. It’s bulky and pricey, and its spinning hard drive will feel slow for people used to speedy SSDs, but it can deliver titanic capacity. With tons of storage capacity and a bevy of ports and slots that pros need, the LaCie 1big Dock ($679 for the 16TB version tested) solves both problems. Nor will you likely be able to fit all of your work onto your laptop’s internal drive, especially if you’re shooting and editing at 4K resolution or in RAW formats.

If you’re a pro photographer, a video editor, or other creative professional, plugging all of your peripherals into an ultraportable laptop with just a handful of USB ports is impossible without buying a bouquet of adapters and hubs.
